You have compiled such a vast array of transcription companies and, again, thank you so very much for all of your effort and time.

    Good morningJanis,

I was interested in becoming a part-time freelance transcriptionist. I currently have a full time job in a Law Firm and would like to supplement my income and free time in the evenings and weekends. I have viewed your website and am just not sure which way would be the best to go to start. I have over 30 years secretarial and transcription experience, 28 of which are in the legal field. I would really appreciate and look forward to your suggestions. Thank you.

To my mind, the ‘Way with Words’ company’s audio test is utterly pointless, consisting of the kind of drivel fed to teenagers by the likes of Capital Radio and with rock music overlaid throughout. I am not arguing that an audio test should be easy but it should not be filled with mindless crap either just to make it difficult. My verdict: unrealistic and a time waster. It says a lot about the people running the company and their mental state.

    Hi Janis

Wonderful page you have set up here. I have a question for you or anybody who could help me. My current situation is as follows: I am training with Carrer Step (about half way into the program). I have started looking for job opportunities when i graduate and i must say i am quite discouraged. Most companies only want US citizens or legal residents. I am South African (english being my first language) and currently reside in Spain. Do you know of companies that hire people who are not USA citizens?

Thank you and keep up the good work. I will definitily paste this into my “favourites”.

    Regards
    Guille

I have been a medical transcriptionist and general transcription in India, and I was looking for transcription jobs from US or UK when I found your website. I would say it is extremely useful and helpful. My heartfelt thanks to you for creating such a resourceful site which could be a springboard for many like us to land a transcription job. Would also request to add some company’s name who allows non-residents or non-citizens to work for them online.
    Regards,
    Arindam..

  12. August 7, 2012 at 9:57 am

Thank you, Arindam, for your kind words. I will look into finding some companies that will hire non-USA and non-Canadian citizens.

Greetings. I am the owner of Master Transcription (Chicago/Austin). We provide our longstanding and prestigious clientele with transcripts of extremely high quality. While my experience has been that it is almost impossible to find transcriptionists who have sterling English skills, have a special finesse with conveying on “paper” how people really speak, are not mystified by how to transcribe long sentences business terms of art, etc., they do exist, and those are the individuals with whom I wish to work.

The vast majority of the work we do is of the one-one interview variety, whether nonverbatim or verbatim/time-coded. Topics are sophisticated, and audio quality is generally quite high, either because our clients are video production companies or because they’re corporate clients who are experienced at recording an interview. We very rarely do focus groups.

If you have very high standards and want to be appreciated, contact us.

For freelance transcribers out there, I’d also recommend trying out TranscribeMe.com. They currently pay $30 per audio hour – decent if you ask me.

  19. Rhonda
    October 19, 2012 at 3:18 pm

A word of caution about Way With Words. I contacted them in good faith and went through the testing process: grammar/punctuation (passed), first audio test (entertainment clip about Britney and Justin, poor quality, heavy accents and lots of background music – passed), was contacted by HR with additional testing – audio clip cell phone interview (HINGS) on marketing topics, plus was told if I pass there will be two weeks more of additional testing (!). I said OK, just to see where it’s all going. The HINGS file has many sounds actually missing, because the cell signal is being lost, on top of being recorded over a cell phone, when the interviewee is driving or riding a train, the quality is awful. I have experience with multimedia work and cleaning up audio files and I have professional audio software; so I did everything possible to restore the quality of the audio and I can tell you parts of words are actually missing (you can see how the sound wave is interrupted); they can’t be guessed either. Even so, my husband and I went through the file a hundred times and clarified everything with the exception of one spot where the audio was missing; still, their response was that we didn’t pass. We then did a search “Way With Words scam” and found out that a lot of people went through this process and were finally rejected; only one person passed the HINGS transcript and was rejected at the next step. There is only one person on one forum saying how happy she is working for these guys and that the quality is consistently excellent; her entire post seems manufactured. I haven’t found anybody else who is actually working for WWW, so I am inclined to regard them as highly suspicious. I can’t tell why they would lead people along and waste their time only to “fail” them in the end, but they are very much unlike any other transcription business I ever worked for, and if the quality of their tests is indicative of the actual work they give out, then you don’t want to work for them; deciphering their audio takes 12 hours of work for 7 minutes of audio!

  20. October 19, 2012 at 6:25 pm

That is an interesting question, Janet. I’d say yes, if you are being paid by PayPal. But if it’s a check payment, a company may not want to pay the postage to mail it to you in a foreign country. I think one of the biggest reasons a company doesn’t hire outside the US and Canada is because they want someone that speaks English as their first language. So, that’s not a problem with you! (on applications, you might specifically state that you are a US Citizen living abroad so they don’t question your foreign address.

  21. October 19, 2012 at 6:27 pm

Thank you Rhonda, for telling us about this! I’ll take that company right off the list, right now!! That is horrible! I hope people will see your comment and not waste time applying there.

Hello! Thank you for this list. I must say I am at the end of my rope and very discouraged. I am trying to find a company that pays a living wage. I am working for pennies here, but am killing myself. Do you know where I can test for a higher wage?

  29. June 25, 2013 at 8:40 am

    Hi Janis,
I just found your site and I’m so glad I did. I did the exact same WWW test as Rhonda and also got the email that I failed, even though I’ve been transcribing for a few years and currently work for other transcription companies. They are a waste of time.

Recently I have been asked about resources for beginning transcribers and I most definitely will be sharing this site, it is a great resource for new and experienced transcribers.

    Keep the good work going.

  30. June 25, 2013 at 10:48 am

    Hi Kelly,
Most transcription companies don’t allow their transcribers to disclose payment information, so you’d have to go through the list of companies and see which ones appeal most to you. You can also go to http://transcriptionhaven.com, which is a fantastic forum for transcriptionists of all experience levels. They share information about the best companies to work for and the ones to stay away from. It’s free to join and it’s a wonderful and supportive group. I’m sure they could help you find the type of job you’re looking for. :)

    Hi Guga,
Thanks for leaving a comment. My suggestion for you would be to go through the list of companies and apply to the ones that appeal to you. You can also join TranscriptionHaven.com for job leads and information about good companies to apply to and companies to stay away from. Good Luck!

You and are your team have put in an endless amount of work to create this fabulous list of companies for us, Janis! I have 32 years’ experience as a professional MT, 27 of which were full time years. In the last 5 years I’ve been working 40 hours a week, daytime hours, in the public sector as a customer service rep (which I adore) and another 15-20 hours doing MT work at home during the evenings and weekends. My beloved MTSO is rapidly running out of work thanks to Epic, and I’m finding that I spend more time waiting for a dictation to come in than I do actually working. I’ve already applied to several of the companies on your list this morning. The problem I see is that most MTSOs require more than 20 hours for part-time work. I simply can’t physically and mentally do that much on top of my full time day job. I’ve been fortunate to work for MTSOs that will let me work between 15 and 20 hours a week, evenings and weekends. Any advice on companies that are amenable to 15-20 hours?

Hello, I have been employed full-time as a medical transcriptionist for the past four years, and am looking for some supplemental income. Working nights and weekends are fine with me, as I have time to devote to a second job. Any help you could give me would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi Jan,
My advice to you is to just keep researching and applying and eventually you’ll find a company that offers the hours that you are looking for. Unfortunatly, I don’t have information about specific company’s hours. Sorry I couldn’t be more of a help for you.

Hi Kimberly, my advice to you would be to visit our company listing page and start applying. You could also register at the Transcription Haven forum and network with other transcriptionists to learn about job leads.

    HI Mike,
Unfortunately, I’m not in a position to link you up with doctors or transcription companies to provide you with work. You could visit my list of companies and scroll down to the medical transcription companies and then contact them to see if they’d be willing to outsource work to you. Good luck!

    Greetings mam,

I would like to ask you if there is any Medical Transcription company that can give work to someone based in India and an IC.

    HI Deepak,
I’m sorry, I don’t know of any American transcription companies that will hire people people outside of the country due to need to have perfect American grammar and spelling, which can be hard for people that don’t speak English as their first language. Have you tried MTurk? They are an Amazon based task site that often has quick transcription jobs that you may be able to do. Good Luck!

Thank you so much for this website. It has saved me hundreds of hours of looking for transcription positions and assisted greatly in narrowing the focus of my search. This is a great resource and shows a lot of hard work on your part. Can’t thank you enough!

Resets Transcribe Audio to Transcripts can be another great transcription service company to add to the list. I’m looking for ways to generate client leads, hope to get some advice here, any? Cheers!

I currently work for Focus Forward. I was hired with no prior experience–they don’t even ask for a resume. Their application process is very simple as is their test (it’s a 10 minute interview that has extremely clear audio). All the info is on their site. So I would amend that entry in your list.

Hello, please include http://scribeon.com – a new audio transcription service. I’ve used this service several times to convert my audio and video files to text. The result is very accurate, their transcribers have good ears.
