Being a freelance transcriptionist requires more than just quick fingers on the keyboard. You need to have a good listening ear and a great grasp on grammar and punctuation. For many of us, it’s been many years since we had any type of grammar lesson.

I have provided information on some of the most commonly used punctuation and grammar rules, including A Little Guide To Apostrophies, and Rules For Using Commas.  After you’ve brushed up on your grammar and punctuation rules, test  yourself to see  how much you really do know.

The Guide to Grammar and Writing Website has a gigantic list of interactive quizzes. This is a site with 174 free grammar and punctuation exercises and tests of varying difficulty. This is a site worthy of a bookmark.

About.com is another site with a list of links to free grammar quizzes.

Grammar-Monster is chock full of grammar and punctuation rules and quizzes to test your knowledge. They even have a section of easily confused words like affect and effect, and a list of abbreviations.

UsingEnglish.com has a  selection of 266 free English language quizzes covering grammar, usage and vocabulary for beginner and intermediate level English students. Simply answer all of the questions in the quiz and press submit to see your score and other statistics.

    Dear Janis Bennett,
Thank you for posting this educational article about grammar and where to find the sites for grammar practice, etc. For couple of weeks now, I’ve been searching the internet for website that offer quizzes and practice assignment for improvement of grammar, sentence fragments, etc and improvement of my typing skills, etc. Now with the tools that you’ve provided, I can improve and practice my skill so that later on during the year, I can apply to several free lance writing jobs or even join free lance writing website to bid on writing assignment jobs. Again, thank you Janis Bennett for the post.

Do you have any comprehensive grammar books that you recommend for people who have been out of school? Do you recommend relaying on the internet only?

    Hi Diamond,
Yes, I’ve found that you can find all the grammar help you need online, for free! As long as you got a reputable website, like the ones I’ve posted on this page.A lot of colleges also put grammar lessons, quizes, and resources online. Just do a search in your favorite browser and you’ll get tons of results! :) Thanks, Janis
